How to Explain Employment Gaps on Your CV

· By CV Experts

A gap in your work history can feel like a spotlight shining on the one thing you would rather nobody noticed. Whether it lasted three months or three years, that empty stretch on the page can make even a strong candidate feel exposed. Here is the reassuring truth: employment gaps are far more common than you think, and handled well, they rarely cost you the job.

Careers are no longer the straight, unbroken lines they once were. Redundancy, caring responsibilities, illness, travel, study, and simply taking time to find the right next move are all part of normal working life. What matters is not that you have a gap, but how you present it.

Why gaps worry us more than they worry recruiters

Most candidates assume a recruiter will see a gap and immediately think the worst. In reality, an experienced recruiter has seen thousands of CVs and knows that life happens. What actually raises a concern is an unexplained gap that looks like it is being hidden.

The problem is rarely the gap itself. It is the silence around it. When you leave a period blank and say nothing, you invite the reader to fill it with their own assumptions. A short, confident explanation closes that door and lets your experience speak.

Be honest, always

The golden rule is simple: never lie about dates or invent a role to paper over a gap. Stretching your employment dates to cover the space almost always unravels, whether at reference stage, on a background check, or in the interview itself. Once trust is broken, the strongest CV in the world cannot repair it.

Honesty does not mean over-sharing. You are not obliged to explain every personal detail. You simply need to account for the time in a way that is truthful and moves the reader on.

How to present a gap positively

The best approach is to frame the time in terms of what you gained or did, rather than leaving a blank the reader has to interrogate. Consider treating meaningful gaps almost like an entry on your CV:

  • Career break for family: “2022 to 2023: Career break to provide full-time childcare. Maintained industry knowledge through online courses.”
  • Redundancy: simply carry on to your next role. A gap of a few months after redundancy needs no special explanation at all.
  • Travel: “2021: Took a planned career break to travel, developing independence, adaptability, and cultural awareness.”
  • Study or retraining: list it as you would any qualification, because that is exactly what it is.
  • Health: “2020: Time away from work for health reasons, now fully resolved and ready to return.” Keep it brief and forward-looking.

Notice how each of these is honest, short, and points ahead rather than dwelling on the past.

Use the years, not the months

One simple formatting trick can quietly soften shorter gaps. If you write your dates using only years rather than exact months, a gap of a few months between roles may not even show. This is not dishonest, it is a normal convention, and many CVs are written this way. Just be ready to give exact dates if asked, and never use this to disguise a gap of a year or more.

Show you did not stand still

Whatever the reason for your break, evidence that you kept moving reassures a recruiter enormously. Even small things demonstrate initiative and momentum:

  • An online course or professional qualification
  • Volunteering or community work
  • Freelance or part-time projects
  • Keeping up with developments in your field

If you did any of these during your gap, include them. They turn an empty period into a story of someone who stays engaged and keeps growing.

Prepare your spoken answer too

Your CV opens the door, but you should expect a friendly question about the gap at interview. Prepare a calm, one-sentence answer that matches what you have written, then steer the conversation back to what you offer. Practise it until it feels natural. The goal is not a lengthy justification, it is a relaxed, honest response that signals you have nothing to hide.

A gap does not define you

Your experience, skills, and achievements are what make you the right hire. A gap is simply one chapter in a longer story, and when you present it with honesty and confidence, most recruiters barely register it. The candidates who struggle are the ones who let the gap loom larger in their own minds than it ever does in the reader’s.
