Should You Include a Photo on Your CV?

· By CV Experts

It seems like such a small decision, yet it trips up more applicants than almost any other. You have finished your CV, it looks smart, and then you pause over one question: should you add a photo of yourself? Some templates leave a neat little space for it, friends give conflicting advice, and you have probably seen CVs done both ways. So what is the right call?

For most people applying for jobs in the UK, the short answer is no. A photo is usually best left off. That may surprise you, especially if you have seen glossy CVs online with a headshot in the corner, so let us explain the reasoning clearly and then cover the genuine exceptions.

Why UK recruiters generally prefer no photo

The main reason comes down to fairness and the law. UK employers must recruit without discriminating on the basis of characteristics such as age, race, or gender. A photo introduces exactly that kind of information before anyone has read a word about your skills.

To protect against any suggestion of bias, many organisations would simply rather not have a photo in front of them. Some larger employers even use anonymised recruitment, stripping out names and images so that candidates are judged purely on merit. Handing them a photo works against the very system designed to give you a fair hearing.

A photo takes up valuable space

There is a practical objection too. Your CV has a job to do in a very small space, and recruiters spend only seconds on their first scan. Every centimetre should be selling your skills, experience, and achievements.

A headshot occupies room that a strong personal statement or an extra achievement could fill far more persuasively. Ask yourself what will win the interview: a photograph, or another line of evidence that you can do the job. The answer is almost always the evidence.

It can distract from what matters

You want the recruiter focused on your abilities, not forming impressions from an image. A photo, however professional, invites the reader to judge on appearance rather than substance. It can also date a CV or introduce an unintended tone, especially if the picture is anything less than perfectly polished. Keeping the focus on your words keeps the focus where you have the most control.

When a photo is expected

None of this is an absolute rule, and there are clear situations where a photo is not only acceptable but expected:

  • Acting, modelling, and presenting roles, where your appearance is a genuine part of the job.
  • Some hospitality and front-of-house positions, particularly abroad, where a photo is a local convention.
  • Applications in certain European countries, such as Germany or France, where a photo has traditionally been part of a standard CV. Always research the norm for the country you are applying to.
  • Personal branding materials, such as a LinkedIn profile or a portfolio site, which are a different thing from your CV entirely.

If you work in one of these fields, a professional, well-lit headshot can be the right choice. The key word is professional. A casual snap or a cropped holiday photo does more harm than no photo at all.

What to do instead

If you want to bring a human touch to your application without a photo on the CV itself, you have good options:

  • Keep a polished, up-to-date LinkedIn profile with a professional photo, and include the link on your CV.
  • Let your personal statement convey warmth and personality through its tone.
  • Focus your energy on the content, because a clear, confident, well-written CV builds a stronger impression than any image.

This way the recruiter meets the real you through your achievements first, and can put a face to the name later if they wish.

When in doubt, leave it out

If you are ever unsure, the safe default for a UK application is a clean CV with no photo. You lose nothing by leaving it off, and you avoid every one of the risks above. Very few employers will ever penalise you for not including a picture, while some may quietly set aside a CV that has one.

The heart of the matter is simple. Your CV should win interviews on the strength of what you have done and what you can do. Everything on the page should serve that goal, and for most people a photo does not.
